in the capital market during the decade of 1991-2000. Govt. of
India adapted the New Economic policy in
1991 to face the
challenges then posed by our economy. LPG became the Mantra for
the Decade. GoI initiated number of financial sector reforms
also focusing on regulation of the capital Market, functioning
of primary market, transparency in secondary market development
of debt market and investors' protection. SEBI was set up to
takeover the regulation of stock exchanges. It was given
statutory power mainly based on the concept of investor
protection and capital market regulation. As a consequence,
Indian Capital Market became quite different during the decade.
It became larger in size with foreign investors, more market
intermediaries, more investors and strong regulatory authority
and has shown rapid growth in the last decade of 20th century.
